What about the men?

What about the men….that’s it, what about the men?

That’s what I heard deep down in my spirit… I paused for a second wondering what that was about when it dawned on me, we don’t pay much attention to the men who are hurting, there are SO many men that have been wounded emotionally and sexually too, will we continue to ignore them? Remember… “Hurt people hurt others”.

Yes, I know more women that have suffered sexual abuse and trauma BUT I know a number of men that have suffered that too! It seems like there is a part of my subconscious that thinks “they are men, they are stronger, they will deal with it, they will be fine”; how sad! Yes, more women suffer sexual abuse than men however, there are a lot of men out there who were and still are being sexually abused. What resources do we have available to help them?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked through the Red Light District (RLD) here in Amsterdam and heard people snicker while pointing to the women and making snide and derogatory comments. I can’t repeat what I’ve heard people say as they walked through the transgender part of the RLD, laughing at the men/women and making obscene and lewd gestures. Sigh…

Those women are trapped, the men are too! I am already an advocate for the women, being an advocate for women is in my blood, it is part of who I am; however, I want to be an advocate for the men. I want to be a friend to them too, a safe person, an embodiment of Christ who is love.

One of my favorite things is the medallion that was created by famous potter and abolitionist Josiah Wedgwood with the inscription  “Am I Not A Man And A Brother?”. Think about this…. the next time you’re about to throw, no hurl the first stone at a man in the sex industry, ask yourself “is he not a man and a brother?”

Then God said “let us make man in our own image”…
